Description

MRC1, also known as MMR (macrophage mannose receptor 1), CD206 and CLEC13D (C-type lectin domain family 13 member D), is a single-pass type I transmembrane protein and a member of the mannose receptor family of the C-type lectin superfamily.  MRC1 contains  8 C-type lectin domains, 1 fibronectin type-II domain and 1 ricin B-type lectin domain in the extracellular region. MRC1 mediates the endocytosis of glycoproteins by macrophages. MRC1 binds both sulfated and non-sulfated polysaccharide chains. MRC1 has been shown to bind high-mannose structures on the surface of potentially pathogenic viruses, bacteria, and fungi so that they can be neutralized by phagocytic engulfment. The recognition of complex carbohydrate structures on glycoproteins is an important part of several biological processes, including cell-cell recognition, serum glycoprotein turnover, and neutralization of pathogens. MRC1 acts as phagocytic receptor for bacteria, fungi and other pathogens. It also functions as a receptor for Dengue virus envelope protein E and interacts with hepatitis B virus envelope protein.
