Description

CD13, also known as ANPEP (alanyl aminopeptidase), APM (aminopeptidase M) and APN (aminopeptidase N), is a single pass type II transmembrane protein consisting of a short cytoplasmic tail, a transmembrane domain, and a 935 amino acid (aa) extracellular domain (ECD). The large ECD contains a pentapeptide consensus sequence characteristic of members of the zinc-binding metalloproteinase superfamily. CD13 is a broad specificity aminopeptidase belonging to the Peptidase M1 family. CD13 may be involved in the metabolism of regulatory peptides of diverse cell types, responsible for the processing of peptide hormones, such as angiotensin III and IV, neuropeptides, and chemokines.  CD13 located in the small-intestinal and renal microvillar membrane, and also in other plasma membranes. In the small intestine CD13 plays a role in the final digestion of peptides generated from hydrolysis of proteins by gastric and pancreatic proteases. CD13 cleaves antigen peptides bound to major histocompatibility complex class II molecules of antigen presenting cells and to degrade neurotransmitters at synaptic junctions. CD13 Is also implicated as a regulator of IL-8 bioavailability in the endometrium, contributing to angiogenesis.  CD13 is a receptor for human coronavirus that is a cause of upper respiratory tract infections. It also mediates human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection. Defects in the CD13 gene may be a cause of various types of leukemia or lymphoma. CD13 plays a critical role in the pathogenesis of cholesterol gallstone disease.
