Description

APLP1 (Amyloid beta precursor like protein 1) is a single-pass type I transmembrane protein of the highly conserved APP (amyloid precursor protein) family. APP functions as a cell surface receptor and may play a role in neuron synaptic maturation during cortical development.  APLP1 binds zinc and copper in the extracellular domain (ECD) but with no Cu2+ reducing activity.  APLP1 can be cleaved by secretases in a manner similar to amyloid beta A4 precursor protein cleavage. This cleavage liberates a C-terminal cytoplasmic fragment that may act as a transcriptional activator. APLP1 may interact with G-protein signaling pathways and regulate neurite outgrowth through binding to components of the extracellular matrix such as heparin and collagen I.  The cleaved gamma-CTF peptide, C30, is a potent enhancer of neuronal apoptosis.
